Hydrocortisone Dosage: How Much to Use and Application Instructions

Duration Limits
Maximum treatment duration: 7 days
Do not use topical hydrocortisone products for hemorrhoids for more than 7 consecutive days without consulting a healthcare provider. Prolonged use of topical corticosteroids can cause:
- Skin thinning (atrophy)
- Increased risk of infection
- Delayed healing
- Stretch marks in severe cases
If symptoms persist after 7 days, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.
Special Populations
Elderly
No dosage adjustment typically needed, but elderly patients may have thinner skin and should be monitored for local side effects.
Pregnancy
Consult a healthcare provider before use. While topical hydrocortisone has minimal systemic absorption, medical guidance is recommended during pregnancy.
Children
- Children under 12: Use only under medical supervision
- The safety profile is similar to adults, but application should be limited to the smallest effective amount
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not apply extra product to make up for a missed application.
Tips for Effective Use
- Apply after bowel movements for best results
- Gently clean and dry the area before each application
- Use the smallest amount needed to cover the affected area
- Avoid rubbing vigorously when applying
- Consider using unmedicated wipes for cleaning to reduce irritation
