Saline Nasal Spray Dosage: How to Use It Properly
Last reviewed: December 2025
Overview
Saline nasal spray has no maximum dose because it contains no active drugs. It can be used as often as needed throughout the day. The key is proper technique to get the best results.
General Dosing Guidelines
Adults and children over 2 years:
- 1-2 sprays per nostril
- Use as needed throughout the day
- No maximum number of times per day
Infants and toddlers (under 2 years):
- Use infant-specific saline drops or spray
- 1-2 drops per nostril
- Use before feeding and sleep to help with congestion
- Follow with gentle suction if needed (bulb syringe)
How to Use Nasal Spray Properly
Correct technique:
- Blow nose gently to clear loose mucus
- Shake bottle if directed
- Keep head upright or tilted slightly forward
- Close one nostril with finger
- Insert spray tip just inside the open nostril
- Aim slightly toward the outer wall of the nose (away from septum)
- Squeeze bottle while breathing in gently
- Repeat for other nostril
- Avoid sniffing hard — let solution work naturally
For best results:
- Wait a minute, then blow nose gently
- Repeat if needed after 5-10 minutes
- Wipe spray tip clean after each use
When to Use
For congestion relief:
- Every 2-4 hours as needed
- More frequently during acute cold/allergy symptoms
- Before using other nasal medications (helps them work better)
For daily maintenance:
- Morning and evening
- After exposure to dry or dusty environments
- During air travel (before, during, and after flights)
For allergies:
- Use after potential allergen exposure
- Helps rinse pollen/dust from nasal passages
- Can be used before and after going outdoors
Saline Irrigation (Neti Pot/Rinse)
For more thorough cleaning, saline irrigation delivers larger volumes:
Preparation:
- Use only distilled, sterile, or previously boiled water
- Never use tap water (risk of rare but serious infection)
- Mix with provided salt packets or use pre-mixed solutions
Technique:
- Lean over sink, tilt head sideways
- Pour or squeeze solution into upper nostril
- Let it drain out lower nostril
- Repeat on other side
- Gently blow nose afterward
Frequency:
- 1-2 times daily for chronic sinus issues
- As needed for acute congestion
What to Avoid
- Don’t share spray bottles between people
- Don’t use tap water for irrigation (use sterile/distilled)
- Don’t spray forcefully into the nose
- Don’t use if bottle tip appears contaminated
- Replace bottle after illness resolves or per manufacturer recommendation
Special Situations
Before other nasal medications: Using saline 10-15 minutes before steroid sprays or other medications helps:
- Clear mucus so medication can reach tissue
- Improve absorption
- Reduce irritation
Post-surgery: Follow surgeon’s specific instructions — often involves:
- More frequent use initially
- Specific technique to avoid disturbing healing tissue
- Gradual return to normal use
During pregnancy:
- First-line treatment for pregnancy congestion
- Safe throughout all trimesters
- No concerns for fetal development
