Selenium Sulfide Dosage: How to Use It Safely

Last reviewed: December 2025

Overview

Selenium sulfide is available in 1% OTC strength and 2.5% prescription strength. Unlike gentler dandruff shampoos, selenium sulfide is typically used only 2-3 times per week rather than daily. Proper application technique and thorough rinsing are essential for effectiveness and to minimize side effects.

Available Strengths

1% selenium sulfide (OTC):

  • Selsun Blue
  • Head & Shoulders Clinical Strength
  • Various store brands
  • No prescription needed

2.5% selenium sulfide (prescription):

  • Selsun (brand name)
  • Generic selenium sulfide lotion
  • For more severe cases
  • Requires doctor’s prescription

How to Apply — Scalp Treatment

Step-by-step for dandruff:

  1. Wet hair thoroughly with warm water
  2. Apply 1-2 teaspoons to scalp (adjust for hair length)
  3. Massage into scalp with fingertips
  4. Work through hair if treating seborrheic areas
  5. Leave on for 2-3 minutes (not longer)
  6. Rinse very thoroughly — this is crucial
  7. Repeat application if product directs

Critical points:

  • Do not leave on longer than directed
  • Rinse until water runs clear
  • Wash hands thoroughly after use

Usage Frequency — Dandruff

Initial treatment phase:

  • Use twice weekly for 2-4 weeks
  • Do not use daily
  • Allow 3-4 days between uses

Maintenance phase:

  • Reduce to once weekly
  • Or use every 1-2 weeks as needed
  • Some people need only monthly use

Important: More frequent use increases risk of side effects without improving effectiveness.

For Tinea Versicolor (Body)

Application to skin:

  1. Apply to affected body areas
  2. Leave on for 10 minutes (longer than scalp use)
  3. Rinse thoroughly
  4. Repeat daily for 7 consecutive days

Alternative regimen:

  • Apply and leave on overnight
  • Wash off in morning
  • Usually for 1 week

Your doctor will provide specific instructions for your case.

By Age Group

Adults:

  • Standard dosing as above
  • Adjust frequency based on response

Children 2 years and older:

  • Same application technique
  • Use smaller amounts appropriate to scalp size
  • Adult supervision recommended

Children under 2:

  • Not recommended without physician guidance

Special Situations

Severe seborrheic dermatitis:

  • May use 2.5% prescription strength
  • Initially twice weekly
  • Reduce frequency as condition improves

Thick scales present:

  • May need to use a keratolytic first
  • Doctor may recommend salicylic acid shampoo before selenium sulfide
  • Helps medication penetrate better

Tinea versicolor on large body areas:

  • May need help reaching back areas
  • Ensure complete coverage of affected skin
  • Don’t apply to face or genitals

Application Tips

Before using:

  • Remove rings and metal jewelry (prevents discoloration)
  • Protect eyes from product
  • Have clean towels ready

During application:

  • Focus on the scalp, not hair lengths
  • Use fingertips, not fingernails
  • Ensure coverage of all affected areas

After application:

  • Rinse extremely thoroughly
  • Rinse for longer than you think necessary
  • Check for any remaining residue
  • Wash hands completely

What to Avoid

Do not:

  • Use daily (unless specifically directed)
  • Leave on longer than recommended
  • Apply to broken or irritated skin
  • Get in eyes or mucous membranes
  • Use on face without medical direction
  • Apply immediately before or after coloring hair

Combining with Other Products

Can use with:

  • Regular conditioner (after rinsing selenium sulfide)
  • Standard shampoo on non-treatment days
  • Styling products (after thorough rinsing)

Timing with hair dye:

  • Wait at least 48 hours after coloring to use
  • Can affect hair color
  • Use alternative dandruff treatment right after coloring

If You Miss a Dose

For twice-weekly schedule:

  • Use at next scheduled time
  • Don’t double up applications
  • Resume regular schedule

For tinea versicolor daily treatment:

  • Use as soon as you remember
  • If close to next dose, skip missed dose
  • Complete the full treatment course

When to Adjust Your Routine

Consider using more frequently if:

  • Symptoms return or worsen
  • Seasonal flare-ups occur
  • Initial treatment not fully effective

Consider using less frequently if:

  • Dandruff well controlled
  • Scalp becomes dry or irritated
  • Hair discoloration develops
